Commercial Pilot License

Here’s a clear, no-fluff guide to getting a

Commercial Pilot Certificate

✈️ 1. Meet the basic requirements

You must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
    Read/speak English
  • Hold at least a Private Pilot Certificate
  • Have a Second-Class FAA Medical (or higher)

🧾 2. Get your Private Pilot License (if you don’t already)

  • This is your foundation. You’ll train in aircraft like a Cessna 172 and learn basic flying, navigation, and safety.

🧭 3. Add an Instrument Rating (strongly recommended)

  • Not required, but almost essential for a career.
You’ll learn IFR flying and systems like the Instrument Landing System.

⏱️ 4. Build flight time (this is the big one)

  • To qualify for a commercial certificate under FAA rules, you need:
  • Minimum 250 total hours, including:
  • 100 hours Pilot-in-Command (PIC)
  • 50 hours cross-country
  • 20 hours dual training (with instructor)
  • 10 hours complex OR technically advanced aircraft (TAA) and our Cessna 172 is!
  • 👉 Most people finish closer to 250–300 hours

🛫 5. Commercial flight training

  • You’ll train to a much higher precision level than private pilots.
  • Key maneuvers:
  • Chandelles
  • Lazy eights
  • Steep spirals
  • Power-off 180 accuracy landings
  • Everything must be tight, consistent, and professional

📝 6. Pass the FAA written exam

  • Multiple-choice test
    Covers regulations, performance, weather, systems

🎯 7. Pass the checkride (final test)

  • With an FAA examiner:
    Includes:
  • Oral exam
  • Regulations
  • Aircraft systems
  • Flight planning
  • Flight test
  • Advanced maneuvers
  • Navigation
  • Emergency scenarios
  • Pass this → 🎉 you’re a Commercial Pilot

💼 What you can do after

You can now get paid to fly, such as:

  • Flight instruction (after CFI)
  • Banner towing
  • Aerial photography
  • Charter (with more ratings)

💰 Cost (realistic total path)

  • If you already have Private Pilot Certificate + Instrument Rating: $10K–$20K

🕒 Timeline

  • Fast track: 6–12 months after PPL
  • Typical: 1–2 years total from zero

⚠️ Important reality

  • Getting the certificate ≠ airline job yet
  • To reach airlines, you still need:
  • 1,500 hours total time
    ATP certificate

👍 Smart strategy

  • Most efficient path:
  • PPL
  • Instrument Rating
  • Commercial
  • CFI → build hours while getting paid
